X-Plane 10.03 beta 4 is out – just a few unrelated notes:

  • Legacy scenery packs should work – I’ll write that up in detail in another blog post.
  • If you have Paris or Denver installed, you need to update using the newest updater (version 3.02).  If you update from the About Box, you get this version automatically.  But if you have a version of the updater already on your hard drive, get a new one here.
  • If your third party add-on worked in v9 and is still not in working in v10, please file a bug if you have not done so already.  If you did file a bug, please bear with us – we’re killing off compatibility bugs with each patch, but there are still some major ones out there.  (For example, I have on my plate to fix some bugs with OBJ materials that affect a lot of airplanes.)

And I meant to link to this: everything you ever wanted to know about global scenery but were afraid to ask.

I have a number of technical issues to cover relating to v10 scenery, so I’ll try to increase the blog post frequency to get through it all over the next week or two.

  1. Would one of those ‘technical issues’ related to scenery be the proper rendering of rivers? In west-central Indiana (around Purdue – KLAF) the river valleys seem to be there, but no water is shown.

    1. Hi edward, please check OSM (OpenStreetMap.org). If there is no polygonal river (river that is drawn as a polygon, not just out of line segments), then there is no river in the DSFs (the scenery tiles) either. Read my Interview, it covers this aspect of the OSM processing too:
      //xplane10.wordpress.com/2011/12/10/developer-interview-andras-fabian-mr-x-terrain/

So, there are two possible solutions. If there is no river in OSM at all (no polygon, no line river), then the data needs to go in OSM in the first place. If there are only line rivers (but not polygon rivers), then its something we will need to implement in upcoming X-Plane/Global Scenery versions (yes, its on our wish list too 🙂 )

      1. The river is missing in Darrington, WA ?

What data is used to figure out where there is suppose to be rivers and streams ? There seems to be allot missing in the scenery.

          1. Fantastic !

Looking fwd to your blog !

By the way, Thank U for X-Plane 10 !!! It so amazing with all the new tech !!!

      2. @Adrian – Thanks for the response. I had started reading the article based on Ben’s comment above. It seems to be a great topic for spare time on my upcoming winter break.

I feel this is a great area in which I might be able to contribute to X-Plane, so as I dive into this deeper, can I email you if I have any questions?

  2. Look forward to the V10 scenery info Ben. I’ve been chatting with Aussi about the Opensceneryx look in V10, he’d like the syntax for the ATTR for lighting options, as the objects look far to bright in 10. Great work so far, my 2.5 yr old PC loves XP10.

  3. Does the object materials bug have anything to do with the 1) non-responsive internal lighting and 2) lack of external shading under overcast skies? Both debase the visual experience; under overcast conditions the aircraft looks lighter instead of darker.

If so do you have an ETA for the fix?

  4. Hi Ben, just wondering – are you going to explicitly mention on the release notes when you add optimization changes, or that’s something that we should be testing/reporting on each release?

I guess it’s still too early to look at optimization, but just wanted to be sure I don’t need to keep looking at my fps 😉

  5. Huge improvements in this b4 the fps is now much more leveled, fmc now is stable and does not drop the waypoints.I’m so happy I just had my first pleasant 2hrs flight! Thanks so much!
I haven’t checked this latest beta but until b 3 both moon and sun were setting on top of the scenery rather than behind (mountains or sea) also the reflection of the sun on the water is pretty much unrealistic being like a mirrored image of the sun itself rather than just a splash of light on the surface of the sea.

  6. Hi,

when can we expect the release of the new WED? I would like to built airports. 🙂

Also I have flickering shadows and when changing the point of view the shadows sometimes disappear and the complete lighting change also when changing the point of view. Is that a known bug that will be fixed in the (hopefully near) future?

Best regards and keep up the good work

  7. Hey and thanks for sending a link to the interview. I read it when first posted. One thing I have been interested in since XP10 was almost finished is some technical info. Just how much data does OSM, trees, elevation data stand for? I know the whole set is around 8*9 GB, but what is the individual size of these separate data sources. I just feel interested from a technical perspective so if you do not know its really fine..

  8. Thanks for the help Ben, had no idea my updater was out of date, everything is working great now.

  9. 10.03B4 doesn’t solve my problem. The image continue with strange figures on the sky because of settings!!! I’ll explain: Using ATI CCC I can earn more FPS (50-60) but with XP10 settings (15-30) … solutions?

  10. Can we expect that you change the AI Traffic in the XP10 run? I mean 20 AI Planes which don´t follow routes are not really good. Maybe they fly realistically but I myself would prefer more planes which fly not so realistically. And I think I´m not alone with that opinion.

Besides that, at the moment when I turn on AI Traffic my frame rate drops drastically.

    Best regards

    Kai

    1. I’m not sure I understand what you’re asking for. All AI planes DO file realistic routes. They all fly their routings. They choose altitudes and destinations based on their aircraft size, fuel range, powerplant type etc.

      1. They fly SIDs and STARs?

And what about the quantity? I would like to have tmore than just 20 and that at a reasonable framerate.
