Beta 4 of X-Plane 12 Early Access is available on Steam & through the Laminar Research installer. You should be prompted to auto update the next time you launch the sim, if you haven’t already. Here is a link to Early Access release notes.

This build contains multiple crash fixes, as well as our first go at fixing the magenta (aka pink or purple) sadness. X-Plane renders magenta when it hits a numeric error (a NaN value) inside the rendering engine. There may be multiple causes of NaNs – it’s not all one bug because magenta is a symptom, not a cause, and each bug has to be squashed one by one.

Don’t be surprised if some users see less magenta in the this beta and others do not. If you still see it, please file (or re-file) a bug that includes a screenshot or two of where you see it, and any steps needed to reproduce it.

  1. Hello Team,
With Beta 4 I see frequent light flashes that weren’t there in Beta 3.
Those flashes also affect the faraway scenery which seems to flicker.
The issue is not continuous but very annoying when present.
Not sure how to reproduce it.

    1. I’m seeing the same, but I reckon it is linked to cloud rendering as it seems to affect distant ground scenery textures that border cloud textures (can’t think of a better way to describe that…the base of the clouds would in real life partly blur or obscure the land and the flickering occurs at that point. I’ve got a borderline GPU (GTX 1060 6Gb – better than XP12 minimum spec, but just below recommended spec) so I can only run clouds at lowest setting, but testing higher settings (for me at least) doesn’t improve the flickering.

    2. Yes, I see the distant flickering too. It can be reduced/removed through fiddling with the view distance( increase or decrease distance in some cases) This leads me to assume it’s an artefact associated with the mist/fog.

    3. I see the same effect, have not yet found a way to reproduce it either, for sure it is not related to 3rd party plugins, that I have ruled out.

    4. I’ve experienced this, as well. I see the flashing in the cockpit, the ground, and on the plane itself in external view. So far It seems to only happen when there are nearby clouds.

    5. Yes, thanks everyone, seems pretty much the same I see.
Interesting aspect is that I see the intermittent flickering/flashing only from within the plane. If I select the external view everything appears normal.

(I am using the real time weather as well, have ~40FPS with most settings to max and I have simheaven and ortho4xp tiles as custom scenery)

  2. I’d love to enjoy maximized textures quality even though Vram usage reaches to max.
Can you guys bring a ”keep high res textures” checkbox or something similar for that to happen, please?

    1. Hello there, Hakan
The apparent paradox of using maximized textures when vram is full or not adequate to hold these maximized textures is still something I’m attempting to make sense of.
      it is magic!

  3. Can you fix Linux startup on Steam? Beta1 launched, Beta4 does not. Doesn’t even create a Log.txt file so can’t submit to your bug reporter!

  4. Hi. I’ve bought and install linux x-plane 12 in steam. But it doesn’t start at all. No log.txt file and no global scenery. I have only Global Airports and X-Plane 12 Demo Areas folders in Global Scenery folder. I want play this game please fix it

    1. It will definitely be fixed as part of…
Oh, did I just read the word “game”? That one was good:)
People see it as a pro-sim

  5. Hello team,

The latest installation on Steam on Linux does not open at all. No errors are marked in the log.txt file as well. Are you aware of this issue?

  6. Replay seems to be broken. Hiatus in the recording and random CTD. I also see the flashes in certain lighting conditions with clouds. Otherwise really enjoying.

  7. In the May development update, it was mentioned that the F-14 is still in development. I would like to ask if there is already a finished version of this plane in the public beta or not?
I have one proposal or suggestion for a canopy frame 3D model that is now too low polygon resolution.
While it is OK for the external view, the coarse resolution of the canopy frame is too visible in the internal view. It spoils the impression of the otherwise fine and detailed Tomcat model.
Please try to improve it, I know there can be an existing model for the external view and a finer model for the internal view.
For an experienced creator this shouldn’t be a problem and this model deserves it.
Finally, the F-4 Phantom is in a similar position and would deserve a similar upgrade.
