I haven’t had much time to post, and it’s going to very quiet for another two to three weeks.  This is the calm before the storm.  Everyone on the team is somewhere past redline trying to get as much as we possibly can into the initial release.  We won’t get everything we want into 10.0 – we already knew that – we have too many ideas and there is way too much potential unlocked by some of the major changes to X-Plane.  But we’re still going to try to stuff the release as much as we absolutely can right up until the clock runs out.

So: please bear with us for a few weeks.  There is a ton to discuss, and once we get that DVD master burned, I’ll be in a position to answer more questions, describe some of the new features (which we are really excited about) and generally come out of hiding.

Back to code…BBIAB.

  1. Just before the flood gates of expectation open, a quick reminder to everyone, Gold Master on the DVD just means they are ready to send the DVD out for reproduction, a process that can take a few weeks in and of itself. They are definitely still on schedule, but I’m still banking on December. Early December at best.

Awesome work though Ben (and all of ya), keep it up :-).

    1. Agreed, and true. December it is, however will be quite glad that we will know way more details and see more images prior to the release date in the coming later weeks

  2. So exciting, I know it’s not the place to ask but,

I hope there is a new joystick assignement menu that allow to assign one axis to multiple control liek for example, on a dual Throttle Hotas like my Hotas Warthog, be able to assign left throttle lever for engine 1 and 2 ( left wing engine ) for a 4 engined acf like the B-17, to allow precise control while taxiing…

  3. Thanks for the headsup, and good luck with the final push!

I can’t wait to see what XP10 has in store, and I’m equally excited to participate in the ongoing discussion/development of the product. If I know you guys, it’s going to be something to behold!

  4. Very disappointed that this is a DVD only release and won’t be available on the Mac App Store. Much worse is that it’ll require the DVD in the drive to run. Such outdated inconveniences in DRM clothing should have been left in the last decade where they belonged.

    Oh well.

    1. 70+ gigs of scenery + at least 8gigs probably, for the xplane install would be crazy for mac app store, servers. Let alone payments to apple from LR & us, the buyers. DVD is still the fastest and best way for this, & there will be a usb drive to run the sim minus the dvd in the computer anyway; just as one was offered for v9 .

      1. Distributing 70 GB is one story, copy protection another one! I won’t accept copy protection by DVD. I hope the availability of an USB stick is guaranteed.

    2. Not all of us have the unlimited bandwidth you have. I prefer the physical media to use as a backup.

    3. Yes, the DVD requirement needs to go. I have a 2010 MBA (No DVD drive) and find FSX out of bootcamp to be an easier choice to run when I have time to slap around the patch! (Before I am flamed for running XP9 or FSX on a MBA, I will tell you all that I have achieved a nice level of performance for both of these sims… at least for what I need…)

    4. It’s not uncommon to see 7+ GB apps in the store. It could be reasonably broken up. I’m sure many folks are interested flying in only one continent. You could break the app up into a USA package or Europe package and allow the user to purchase additional regions via in-app purchases, to where the total of all the regions are the cost of the whole package as it is.

    5. Yes, please don’t use that DVD copy protection anymore for X-Plane 10. I just got a new Mac Mini and it doesn’t have one, and I’m not going to buy an external drive just for X-Plane.

The odd time I need to burn something I do it on my old MacBook but my mini is so much better for X-Plane with its dedicated graphics card. I could install the game via disk sharing but that really isn’t practical for daily use.

The thing is, you’re only bothering legitimate users such as myself with this kind of copy protection. It kind of misses the point. You could distribute the sim app itself in the app store and distribute the scenery through DVDs.

  5. I am feeling a bit excited all of a sudden. For a while there my interest in X-plane was weening. now however i can feel the rush come back as we all prepare for XP10.

  6. It would be nice to be able to buy the product with a specific region bundled in the Mac App Store and buy other regions as either DLC or in-app purchases. Buying the DVD from Canada is a pain: either we get overcharged by the local distributor or we have to pay $$$$ for shipping…. 🙁

This product seems such a good fit for the Mac App Store (29$ for the base game including North America) and 4.99 in-app for each of the 4 (??) other regions. Add-ons such as planes and airports could also be in-app purchases.

One way or another I’m looking forward to spend some cold winter evenings with V10 !!
